    Description

    African ‘Knobkerrie’ Hardwood Mace.
This weapon was acquired some 8-10 years ago at an estate sale in the Hollywood Hills. It was part of a larger collection of ethnographical pieces and ‘armes blanches’.
The Knobkerrie is used by African peoples - particularly South African tribes such as the Zulu - as a weapon of war, a symbol of authority, and for hunting.
The hard wood club could be used to bash the skull of an enemy, however it is also surprisingly effective as a throwing weapon.
This particular club has some small splits in the wood on one side (see pics). It is not known how these were acquired, and they may be natural.
Despite this, due to the hardness of the wood, it has no effect on the structural integrity of the weapon. It is incredibly solid and smooth.
I have used it as an interesting and attractive piece of decor. It looks great hanging on the wall of any room with a masculine sensibility - especially in a study.
It doesn't fit with the aesthetics of my current surroundings, and so I hope it finds a great new home.
The Knobkerrie is still used today, especially in rural areas - and it features on the South African Coat of Arms.
    All sales are final.
