18TH CENTURY GEORGIAN STERLING SILVER BOUGIE BOX (WAX BOX) BY WILLIAM LESTOURGEON c1775
An 18th century bougie box, "bougie" being the French name for "candle," with a center hole for wax taper coils that would be threaded through that hole and lit to make a candle. The lid has a sliding extinguishing cover that has the added benefit of cutting the wick.  In England, the boxes were favored as desk accessories for lighting and heating sealing wax in correspondence and important papers and were especially useful when traveling. This is a small round box, about 2-1/4" in diameter and 1-1/4" tall. There is a buckle-shaped fold-in handle to one side.  The box is signed WL, William Lestourgeon, registered in London in 1765. There is a dent in the lid, pictured above.  The box is signed on the base, WL, and it weighs 2.0 troy ounces.
